I'll start with a story from my week.
I live in an fruit orchard. I work here, when I'm not working somewhere else. It's a good source of income. However, it so happens that, without fail, equipment frequently breaks down on me. Sometimes, in the period of one day, the tractor, the forklift, AND the fourwheeler decide to quit working.
This particular Thursday, it was the tractor/mower. I was mowing. It's really a great time to think, and so sometimes I get pretty engrossed in my thoughts. I glanced back, and thought to myself, man, it seems like the tractor is really putting out a lot more exhaust than ususal. Huh, funny. Oh well, it does stuff like that. So I kept mowing. I mean, what, I'm not a mechanic, how am I supposed to know what's wrong with it? Got to the end of the row, and slowed down. All that exhaust caught up with me and I thought, Peeuuu! That smells AWEFUL!!! What IS that? Looked back and down, and there are FLAMES!!! Aaahhh! Mental panic. So I shut everything off and run around to look for something to smother them with. And what do I see? Nothing but dry grass. Hah. Oh good.
So I started blowing on it. To try to put it out, of course. At first, I wasn't sure if I was putting it out or making it bigger. But eventually, I got it out. I have big lungs, I guess.
While it sat there smoldering, I took the opportunity to text my brother and tell him of this hilariousness. I knew he would find it funny.
Once it stopped smoking, I drove it back up to the shed, and went to find my good friend Edgar. One reason we are such good friends is that he knows how to fix things like this; I do not. And, well, I now understand what happened. For all of you who do not speak in this funny mechanical language, I will explain it simply and undetailed-like. The PTO, well, driveshaft basically, that connects the mower to the tractor is what caught on fire. One of the bearings wasn't getting any grease, and therefore got too hot and caught this little plastic piece on fire...which in turn...caught all the grease on fire. So this lovely bearing had to be replaced. Second bearing that's been replaced in 2 days. Thank you Edgar.
Trust me, it makes a lot more sense once you've seen it. Anyhow, I'm thankful that it's now Sabbath and I won't be driving tractor for an entire day. Pear harvest starts up again on Monday. Time to start practicing Spanish...
